In Canada, 14 million people inhabit cities and communities that stretch along the 401 highway. At the center of this thruway is Toronto and surrounding municipalities where the major concentration of 7 million people resides. This is a heavy traffic area with many people driving 50 km or more to reach the city centre on a daily commute. Relieving some of the gridlock, the GO Transit Rail System connects communities to Toronto from as far west as Waterloo and as far east as Peterborough. Recently, GO Transit made the bold move of shifting from standard, low-wattage HID lighting to Solid State Lighting (SSL) solutions at their Aurora station. According to Jerry Mobilio of eLumen Engineering (the design head for this project), the client motivation to choose LED light sources was the excellent performance properties of NextLED round garage lights. These properties included excellent glare control, even and consistent illumination levels, cost effectiveness, energy efficiency, reliability and low maintenance factors. This was a job that entailed smooth collaboration of all parties involved. Congratulations to Jerry Mobilio of eLumen Engineering, Urban Electrical Contractors and Franklin Empire for stepping out of the typical HID convention and delivering a beautiful application with an SSL solution. The result is a pivotal expression of how the intelligent application of new technology can deliver higher quality, more cost-efficient lighting. And a new standard for the future.
